CARE FOR YOUR CHILD:
Ten Tips For Having a Positive Relationship With Your Child

  1. Understand your child’s temperament. . . and your own. How are they the same and how are they different? Does your child have a lot of energy and you prefer to be quiet? Understanding your natures will help you to get along.
  2. Understand your child’s developmental stage and adjust your expectations accordingly.
  3. Spend time with your child. . . engage in at least 10 minutes a day that have "meaning" for you both. This does not include giving directions such as "brush your teeth." It does mean reading, doing art projects, walking, playing, building things, fishing, or just talking about the day etc. together.
    SING. . . DANCE. . . RUN. . . LOVE
  4. Listen. . . your child has important things to say and deserves your complete attention.
  5. Respect your child. He/she will respect you and others in return.
  6. Learn the difference between discipline and punishment. They are not the same and in the long run, discipline is far more effective in teaching a child to control his/her own behavior.
  7. Make sure YOU have a support network for the times you need to cool off or take a break. Every parent needs this from time to time.
  8. Laugh with your child. They can really be funny and laughing is good for the physical body as well as everyone’s mood.
  9. Be involved with your child’s schools and activities and know his/her friends.
  10. Hug your child often!
